In Delgany NS we always have plenty of active events throughout the year. We have regular after school activities and the senior pupils have the opportunity to play on various teams – soccer, hockey, golf and cricket. Every year there is a hockey league and a soccer league. There are also some golf and cricket events organised as well.
We have an active week in school every May and, as well as extra PE and active homework, we hold our annual DORM event. This is the Delgany Obstacle Relay Marathon and is a sponsored event organised by the PA to help raise funds for the school. The children make their way through the obstacles in the course set up in the school grounds.
Another active event is our annual sports day. There is always great excitement in the lead up to the day and the children enjoy practicing for the events in the weeks preceding the day. This year, unfortunately, our sports day had to be cancelled due to the poor weather but the class teachers have all included some extra PE activities and active games in their timetables over the past couple of weeks to make up for it.
While the class teachers integrate maths with other subjects throughout the year each October we have a Maths Week and, during this week, the class teachers make an extra effort to integrate maths with PE and other subjects. During this week the classes also complete a maths trail around the school.
A number of our pupils walk, cycle or scoot regularly to school. This year we have also focused on Walking on Wednesdays as part of our Green Schools flag and, during the second term in particular, the pupils were encouraged to Walk on Wednesdays as much as possible. We also participated in National Walk on Wednesday day in May.
Finally, each March we celebrate Coicís na Gaeilge and during this time we have two céilís – a junior one for Junior Infants to 2nd and a senior one for 3rd class to 6th class.
